Kaunos is located across the river from Dalyan, so to get there we had to cross the river. We were told by another guest in our hotel that you can get a rowing boat across for 6 Turkish Lira return per person just under £2.30. What they did not say is that it is Turkish women who row you across and this particular lady looked very scary, so I paid my dews and got in the boat. The journey across took about 5 minutes of silence, once across we thanked her and off she went still scowling without a word said.
The rest of the way is along a tarmac road surrounded by olive and pomegranate trees with views of the rock tombs in the cliff face. Locals sit outside there houses selling fresh pomegranate juice to people passing, be careful a glass was costing twice as much as the cafe we passed when we got off the boat. The walk was peaceful with hardly another person or vehicle to be seen, it took about 20 minutes and was easy going except for the last bit which was up hill.
To enter Kaunos was 10 Turkish Lira each £4 and there was no guide books when we asked for one, luckily most of the ruins have signs with a description of what the buildings are and what they could have looked like.
Kaunos originates from the 9th century BC and was a Carian city, the ruins include a fortress built high on the hill which we tried to reach but were unable to as we could not find a path to the top, an amphitheatre with it's rows of stone seats in a semi-circle now broken with olive trees growing in between but you can still get a feel of how it must have looked.
A Christian church with it's arched doorway and different sections still visible, Roman baths which are supposed to be some of the best examples for this area of Turkey. Temples to the gods remain and inscriptions suggest they were built to Artemis, Aphrodite, Poseidon and Apollon.
Many other buildings are spread across a wide area and we looked around for 2-3 hours, make sure you take plenty of water as the shop was shut when we were there and it can be hard work walking along the gravel dirt paths.
The views over Dalyan and Iztuzu beach are absolutely stunning and you can get some great panoramic photos. The entrance fee is covered just with the view.
Goats wander between the ruins eating the grass and they are very friendly eating leaves from our hands, but be careful of the brown cow as that charged us as we were walking past it.
Would recommend visiting Kaunos as it has some very interesting ruins, give yourself plenty of time so you do not have to rush around as it is very hot here, make sure you have water and sturdy shoes as there is no proper paths.
So it's back to the river, but first an Efes in the cafe to pick up the courage for the journey back across the river.
