The Golden Mile is arguably the most well-known and publicized area of Durban and with good reason - it stretches all along the beach and is lined on one side with some of the best hotels in the city and on the other with a wide array of amusements, eateries and pubs. Strolling along this well-known promenade one encounters a number of stalls which sell curios and bric-a-brac for tourists, including the Zulu beadwork and woodwork for which Durban is known as well as a wide variety of Indian clothing and fabrics.
Out-of-season the amusement parks are closed, but there is nevertheless always a holiday spirit and the multitude of eateries and watering-holes do a brisk trade, especially after dusk. Early morning sees joggers and fishermen taking to the beach and piers, soon followed by masses of surfers and people out for a day in the sun - typical beachfront behaviour, but with the added bonus of buskers and street-kids fashioning some amazing sand sculptures (which they maintain all day by regularly watering and compacting it). For the sheer enjoyment of a day at the beach, or something as simple as a Wimpy-breakfast with a sea-view, or a buzzing, vibey late night pub-crawl, the Golden Mile has it all and then some.
