[más]Jemez State Monument at Jemez Springs preserves the ruins of the 14th-century pueblo village of Giusewa and the 17th-century Franciscan mission church of San José de los Jemez. Giusewa was named for the hot springs in the area and is the ancestral village of what is now Jemez Pueblo, which is a Native American community belonging to the Towa peoples.
The site in San Diego Canyon consists of 7 acres with an interpretative trail that begins and ends at the small visitor center. The trail is dominated by the remains of the large Spanish church, but it also features a kiva (a traditional place of worship for pueblo peoples) and the remnants of several puebloan structures, all built around a central plaza. The trail is wheelchair accessible.
Giusewa was abandoned during the aftermath of the Great Pueblo Revolt (began 11 August 1680), which temporarily expelled the Spanish and Catholic clergy from pueblo communities in what is now New Mexico. The visitor center includes a small museum that presents the history of the region from a Native American point-of-view. A small car park is also provided.
