[más]The Lord Mayor’s Show in the City of London takes place annually in early November. It claims to be the “world’s oldest civic procession”. The ceremony dates from 1215 when, in return for free elections to the position, the Lord Mayor had to go to Westminster to pledge allegiance to the King. Today this pledge is still given at the Royal Courts of Justice, at the boundary of the City of London.
The office of Mayor goes back to 1189 and the title of Lord Mayor to 1540. It is now largely ceremonial and ambassadorial although the Lord Mayor is formally Chairman of the two governing bodies of the City of London. The position is distinct from the recently created Mayor of London, whose remit covers the whole capital.
The procession stretches for 3 miles, the highlights being the State Coach carrying the Lord Mayor, and the giant figures of Gog and Magog, guardians of the City. The remainder comprises floats of city guilds, other organisations, officials of the pageant and bands. The day ends with fireworks on barges in the Thames. Grandstand seats are available for the procession but need to be booked well in advance. It can be easily watched, though, from the main roads of the route.
