The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge spans from north-eastern North Carolina to south-eastern Virginia and covers an area of 112000 acres.
[más]The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge spans from north-eastern North Carolina to south-eastern Virginia and covers an area of 112000 acres. It's forested wetlands are home to a wide range of wildlife including a variety of two hundred species of birds with 96 of them nesting either directly in or close to the refuge. Mammals that can be seen include grey and red foxes, raccoons, otter, deer and grey squirrels.
One of the main aims of the refuge is to conserve the water resources of the vulnerable ecosystem and to maintain the natural biological diversity of the park. Within the refuge you can also find 5 different species of woodland and huge variety of other plant communities.
There are many unpaved paths of different difficulties for hiking and biking and fishing and boating is permitted at Lake Drummond which is the largest natural lake of Virginia and located right at the centre of the swamp.
The refuge is open daily for hiking and biking from sunrise to sunset. The headquarters of the park are open weekdays from 8am to 4pm with the exception of public holidays. Admission is free.
