Parque Nacional Capitol Reef (Torrey, EE. UU.)

The park, which was once known as “Wayne Wonderland”, was declared a national park in 1971. Since then it was increased by six times of its initial size to protect the Waterpocket Fold that runs through it and now measures 378 square miles. The Waterpocket Fold, a monocline of almost 100 miles, connects Thousand Lakes Mountain with Lake Powell. The park offers miles of hiking trails in various difficulty levels, rock climbing and horse riding and sites for picnicking and camping. Fishing in the Fremont River is possible but a permit needs to be obtained first. The leftovers of the Mormon village Fruita, once famous for its orchards, can be visited. The restored buildings that can be seen include the old schoolhouse, a farm and barn and the blacksmith’s. The orchards have been maintained by the National Park Authority since the village has been closed and can also be visited, fruits may be picked for a small fee. Opening times: Park and campground are open all year round, the visitor centre daily from 8 am to 4.30 pm (extended hours during summer) with the exception of all major holidays. The Nature Centre at Ripple Rock is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 10:00 am to 3.00 pm Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sundays and Mondays. Admission fee: There is an entrance fee for the Scenic Drive which starts right behind Fruita. For pedestrians, bicycles and motorbikes $ 2, for vehicles $ 5 (including passengers) The entrance tickets are valid for 7 days.
